The government hosted ‘Carbon Neutrality Week’ (December 6-December 10) under the theme of ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality before It Is Too Late’. And SK rent-a-car joined this event as a representative company in the mobility sector.

SK rent-a-car said on the 6th that it shared its conversion cases of internal combustion engine company vehicles into non-polluting ones, and also its future plans at the opening ceremony of ‘Carbon Neutrality Week’ held in Oil Tank Culture Park, Mapo-gu, Seoul.

Marking the 1st anniversary of the declaration of ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality’ (vision), this event, co-hosted by Carbon Neutrality Commission and Ministry of Environment, put emphasis on the urgency and gravity of carbon neutrality. And SK rent-a-car was selected as an exemplary company in the mobility sector and invited to present its best examples at the ceremony.

On this day, Jang Bong-geol, head of ESG Management Office, made a presentation on the company’s journey towards the distribution of eco-friendly vehicles in line with its proclamation of the transition into ‘eco-friendly-centric mobility rental company.’

In this regard, the company issued green bonds for the first time since its inception aiming to further spur eco-friendly vehicle rental business. Only green businesses related to EVs or carbon mitigation are eligible for the issuance of green bonds. SK rent-a-car spent about KRW 170 billion in the purchase of 4,200 EVs with KRW 98 billion funded by the green bonds. (※ based on the duration between January 2021 ~ November 2021)

In addition, the company joined KE-100 driven by the Ministry of Environment in last March, followed by the participation in ‘EV100’, a global initiative campaign launched by ‘The Climate Group’, a British multinational non-profit organization in November. SK rent-a-car was the first to join the member of EV100 in the industry, and other subsidiaries also joined this participation, which set an exemplary precedent. Director Yang Chun-seung of Korea Sustainability Investing Forum said, “As the electrification is growing in importance in the road and transportation accounting for 10% of total GHG emissions, SK rent-a-car’s plan for the massive transition into eco-friendly vehicles positioned itself as a leading p_ in terms of global climate leadership.” To be in line with the campaign, the company is accelerating the conversion of all its vehicles into EVs or hydrogen-powered vehicles.

In last April, the company signed a business agreement with Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) for the creation of EV-exclusive complex in Jeju, the largest one in Korea. Through this project, it plans to introduce 3,000 EVs in Jeju branch and install charging facilities with a capacity of 7,200kW.

Going forward, SK rent-a-car will take the initiative in the transition into ‘non-polluting vehicles’ in Korea and roll out new products and services to deliver a higher level of customer value, thereby living up to our reputation as ‘EV-centric mobility rental company.’

Jang Bong-geol, head of ESG Management Office, said, “in recognition of our multi-faceted ESG-related efforts toward the shift to non-polluting vehicles, we moved up two places to Grade A in the ESG management _uation conducted by Korea Corporate Governance Service.” And he added, “As a representative company that keeps converting all vehicles to eco-friendly ones, we will grow as a sincere and exemplary company contributing to higher customer and social values.”

The opening ceremony held in Oil Tank Culture Park, Mapo-gu, Seoul, joined by 50 guests including Prime Minister, Kim Boo-kyum, Minister of Environment, Han Jeoung-ae, Chairman of Carbon Neutrality Commission, Yun Sun-jin, and officials from related public organizations, civic groups and corporations.
