- Signing the ‘K-EV100 cooperation project’ with the Korea Electric Power Corporation on April 16th to pursue the three tasks

SK rent-a-car, which revealed its future identity as an ‘EV-oriented mobility rental company’, plans to build Korea’s largest complex exclusively for electric vehicles on Jeju Island.

SK rent-a-car (CEO: Hwang Il-moon) signed the ‘K-EV100 cooperation project’ with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) (CEO: Kim Jong-kap) at Walkerhill Arcadia (located in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul) on April 16th, 2021. The agreement was made to promote the key tasks concerning the declaration for the K-EV100 (Korea’s 100% shift to zero-emission cars).

As the first step, the two companies decided to establish a place dedicated to electric vehicles in Jeju by 2025 while securing 3,000 EV units and building a 7,200kW charging infrastructure that can effectively operate these EVs. It will become Korea’s first and the largest single complex with a capacity of 3,000 EV units in combination of a facility that enables charging for 2,000 apartment households. It signals the creation of Korea’s representative EV mecca.

SK rent-a-car plans to transform a 23,800 square meter plot currently used for ‘billycar’ branch (62 Yongmun-ro, Jeju-si) to an EV-exclusive complex, offering EV experience for 1.3 million people, which is as many as 10% of the annual visitors to Jeju. ‘billycar’ is an offshoot of SK rent-a-car, beloved for its reasonable rental rates. It will continue its operation by moving to another SK rent-a-car branch (6 Deokji 2-gil, Jeju-si).

“We decided to create an EV-dedicated complex after having an internal study. We have found that having an experience of driving electric vehicles is what we need the most for spreading the use of eco-friendly EVs. It is just like the saying, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.” said the CEO of SK rent-a-car, Hwang Il-moon. “The plot of billycar is the most suitable location for EV-dedicated complex considering all aspects, including car supply, parking, installation of chargers, and scalability. It takes only three minutes from the airport, which enables easy access for travelers, with the largest space among mobility companies on the island.“

The company will further commit to the ESG management that SK Group pursues by annually cutting 12,000 tons of carbon emissions with 3,000 EVs operated by its EV-dedicated complex in Jeju while partaking the island’s ‘Carbon Free Island’ campaign.

On top of that, SK rent-a-car and KEPCO will jointly capitalize the 3,000 EVs in the complex on Energy Storage System (ESS) through the Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology so that they can be utilized as EV chargers or electric power supply depending on the situation.

Lastly, both companies determined to set up a one-stop solution that supports EV rental as well as charging facility installation for corporates wanting to replace their vehicles with electric ones. They will soon set out detailed plans and timeline for the service. This integrated service combining car rental and charging infrastructure will be offered to extended customers, starting from SK Group affiliates.

"It is greatly meaningful that we collaborate our EV complex project with KEPCO, the No.1 electric power operator in Korea,” said an SK rent-a-car official. “We will contribute to creating a win-win future-oriented mobility ecosystem by building an open platform participated by various operators such as EV makers, charging and electric power operators, and maintenance companies.”

The signing ceremony was joined by 14 officials from both companies including Hwang Il-moon, CEO of SK rent-a-car and Lee Jong-hwan, Vice President of KEPCO. Park Sang-gyu, CEO of SK networks also attended to celebrate its subsidiary, SK rent-a-car, marking the significant milestone of reinforcing its EV-centered business model.
