SK rent-a-car (CEO: Hwang Il-moon) announced that it signed a business agreement with the Jeju 6th Industry Support Center (Chairman: Kang Seong-jin) at the Jeju International Convention Center(ICC) on the 20th of August. The collaboration aims to build a regional win-win partnership and facilitate Jeju’s rural convergence industry. Seven officials from the two companies joined the signing ceremony, including SK rent-a-car Jeju branch head Oh Tae-hee and the Chairman of Jeju 6th Industry Support Center Kang Seong-jin.

‘Rural convergence industry' refers to the creation of high value-added jobs and the revitalization of the local economy by manifoldly connecting various industries, such as resource utilization (primary industry), manufacturing/processing (secondary industry), and service (tertiary industry) in rural areas. It is usually called the '6th industry’ in rural areas.

Since its inception in 2014, the Jeju 6th Industry Support Center has discovered farmers, small business owners, and social enterprises with growth potential, differentiation, and entrepreneurial mindset. The center has provided systematic management and customized support for selective certified businesses. So far, a total of 122 6th industry businesses have received the assistance.

Upon this partnership, the two companies plan to establish an organic business cooperative system and contribute to the economic revitalization of the Jeju rural community by efficiently utilizing the 6th industry and Jeju’s agricultural and rural resources.

Under this agreement, SK rent-a-car will introduce diverse promotional events that show local characteristics, such as purchasing various local specialties certified by the government through the Jeju 6th Industry Support Center, followed by offering them for free to customers who use short-term rental cars in Jeju.

The company is also thinking of providing customers with a unique hands-on experience in Jeju on top of the car rental experience, which can be affiliate programs such as 'mandarin picking experience' and 'Jeju chocolate making', or discount coupons for local experience programs.

An SK rent-a-car official said, "customers will enjoy SK rent-a-car with a higher level of satisfaction through products marked as the 'Beyond Farm' brand certified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs or the '6th industry certified business operator'. We will continue to work hard to bring a win-win effect that helps customers and adds value to our customers.”

Prior to this partnership, SK rent-a-car has continuously engaged in activities working with the local community. The company purchased 80 tons of fresh mandarin from Jeju local farms and 220,000 bottles of ‘Samdasoo’ produced by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation for the past two years. And the purchased goods are given for free to SK rent-a-car Jeju branch and billycar users.

Meanwhile, the third ‘Farming+@JEJU Fair & Conference' is currently being held at the Jeju International Convention Center, in which the signing ceremony was held. The exhibition will be conducted both online and offline for a month, from the 19th of this month through the 18th of next month, under the theme of 'rediscovery of the value of the 6th industry in the new normal era'. It is expected to contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas by creating a public forum talking about the qualitative and quantitative growth of the 6th industry.
