SK rent-a-car, join hands to make Jeju a global future mobility leading city

- Participated in an event in celebration of ‘Jeju, Future Mobility Leading Company,’ to share its exemplary case of transitioning to EVs as well as its future plans
- Introduced around 1,000 EVs, and converted one out of three vehicles to EVs this year alone

SK rent-a-car, a disseminator of eco-friendly EVs, attended an event hosted by the local Jeju government to celebrate of hitting 30,000 EV units. Jeju Island is the domestic No.1 city in terms of EV share. And the company announced that it would donate its local subsidies of KRW 900 million.


SK rent-a-car (CEO: Hwang Il-moon) made an announcement on the 29th that he participated in the event held by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province at the Argento Fiore Convention under the theme of ‘Jeju, Future Mobility Leading Company, Brings Growth to Its Clean Nature,’ to share their journey towards transition to eco-friendly EVs and future plans.


The event was joined by 300 governmental and industry officials including Oh Young-hoon, the Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Kim Geyong-hak, the Chairman of Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council, Hwang Il-moon, the CEO of SK rent-a-car, Yoon Seung-won, the Director of Shinhan Card’s Life Business Division, Kim Yeong-hwan, the Director of Korea Power Exchange’s Jeju Branch, officials from the relevant authorities, and EV drivers.


This year marks the 10th anniversary of delivering the policy that aims to make Jeju carbon free island (CFI) by 2030. And the very purpose of this event was to celebrate the achievement of hitting 30,000 EVs. SK rent-a-car joined this event to share its exemplary case of converting to EVs in the region, and also present its future vision of Jeju as an EV leading city.


Hwang Il-moon, the CEO of SK rent-a-car, said, “we will align our business management with the vision of Jeju, a future mobility leading city, by gradually converting our all 3,000 vehicles run in Jeju to EVs by 2025. And with the proactive adoption of domestic and overseas EVs ranging from in-demand models to premium ones in collaboration with diverse stakeholders, such as the local Jeju government, the Ministry of Environment, or car makers, we will contribute to the spread of EVs, and also provide abundant EV driving experiences for customers.”


SK rent-a-car, the largest car rental business in Jeju, converted a total of 1,000 vehicles to EVs this year alone. In last June, the company unveiled its plan to transition its all 3,000 vehicles in Jeju to EVs by 2025, and it converted one out of three vehicles to EVs three years earlier than its deadline. Along with this, it has a plan to make its Jeju Branch equipped with 7,200kW of charging capacity which will allow itself to operate 3,000 EVs as well as to create an EV complex of 27,438 square meters in Jeju, the largest-scale one in Korea. And the company will unveil its ‘Eco Lounge’ at a site of 3,306 square meters in Seogwipo, a cultural complex where both EVs and people can recharge their batteries on the 16th of the following month.


SK rent-a-car carries out social value-creation activities in Jeju. The company decided to donate the entire EV subsidy provided when introducing and transitioning to 1,000 EVs from local governments as part of its social contribution activity. SK rent-a-car assisted with the lunchbox project fee for undernourished children in Seogwipo City last April and provided malnourished elderly on the island with meal kits in September for two consecutive years. Last July, it joined the ‘Companion Beach’ project hosted by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for the first time in the industry, carrying out cleaning activities more than three times a year after adopting Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju. As such, the company continues its various activities with Jeju's local communities.


An SK rent-a-car official said, “we are very pleased to take the initiative in the dissemination of eco-friendly EVs in collaboration with the local Jeju government. Going forward, we will provide a full suite of services including charging facilities in coalition with the local Jeju government, the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the Ministry of Environment so that Jeju tourists can enjoy their trips to the fullest in a more convenience manner.”
